Paper Sculptures

Paper Sculptures

Today we experimented with paper and looked at the way it can be used to create three dimensional shapes. I was particularly interested in origami and therefore created many different origami sculptures, like butterflies, cranes, doves, sharks and flowers. I thought the simplicity and projection of the butterfly was very interesting and so began my garment by using butterflies to create a collar inspired by circus. I also looked at creating large 'scale' shapes which were pleated atone end then folded into a curve at the other. I used these for projected caps sleeves. I thought about the structure of the garment itself, and therefore decided to showcase the darts on the outside as well. I really liked the harshness of these lines and the boxy shape they gave the silhouette, especially the skirt. I found the skirt quite plain and boring, so I made large butterflies and began placing them in different areas to find inspiration. I thought they look fascinating when linked to make a flare at the bottom, so went with this idea.

Overall, I think the sculpture looks very effect and costume-like and I love how it isn't more abstract and interpretative but rather showcases a proper dress. I found the wallpaper the most effective due to its stiffness and delicate floral texture.
