Floyd Grey
Floyd Grey is a 25 year old freelance illustrator. He was born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and graduated from Dasein Academy of Art, Kuala Lumpur. He specialises in fashion illustration and photography. His illustration are both realistic and fanciful, however he uses real people to model his drawings. His proportions are sometimes exaggerated and the female’s face may have big, doe eyes. The styling of the figures also conveys exploration through the fictional daggers and adventurous clothing. To create his illustrations, Grey uses pen and ink.

Demi Smith

Demi Smith is a student at the University of East London who experiments with different ways to create fashion illustrations. One technique she uses is collage which relates to my mammal theme as I create collages of people’s faces using ripped pieces from magazines. I think this is a good way to convey texture and experiment with colour. Smith is very inspired by the photographer Tim Walker due to the way he “creates this fantasy feel and exciting mood”. One piece of his work that Smith was particularly interested in was from his work entitle ‘Tim Burton’s Magical Fashion’. She was intrigued and motivated by the fantasy, drama and romance of this photograph yet thought it had a fashionable perspective.

To create her collaged fashion illustrations, Smith experiments with images from magazines and the internet. She will look at the patterns, flowers, faces, dresses and accessories of images which could be reimagined in her designs. This collage she created was also inspired by Maren Esdar’s work as she is interested in the way Esdar portrays one dress or an outfit from a mixture of materials. Her collages don’t just appear to have texture from the images, Smith also will manipulate the paper by crumpling to give a raised texture. Smith has also used a ring for a hat and made the focal point of the fashion illustration a rose which sits on the waistline of the dress. Demi Smith creates her collaged images by hand or digitally and will sometimes combine both techniques.
