Richard Quinn
Richard Quinn
Richard Quinn is an English womenswear and
textiles designer who graduated from Central Saint Martins after being awarded
with a CSM MA Scholarship by Stella McCartney. McCartney would hold talks at
the university to educate the graduates on waste, from which Quinn thought, “It
was a really good way of working because the more [he] was told [he] couldn’t do
certain things, the more resourceful [he] became.” He explains how he doesn’t
“think you can be a designer now without being sustainable and socially
aware". He established his brand in 2016 after winning the annual H&M
Design Award. From this award, he received £45,000, a year’s mentorship and the
opportunity to produce elements of his winning collection for high street
stores. Quinn’s highly praised MA 2016 collection received an incredible press
response, which included featuring on the cover of ModernMatter Magazine shot
by Juergen Teller. His couture designs are bold, emotive and full of print and
colour. The fabrics he uses are carefully sourced and printed on himself using
ethical processes in his East London studio. He used the money from his award
to invest in a digital printing workshop which uses 70% less water and 80% less
energy than traditional techniques and also allows him to produce the exact
amount of fabric he need, which reduces waste. When designing his garments,
Quinn focuses on his ability to combine handcrafted skill with a refined,
industrial approach. Richard Quinn has been highlighted as a designer to watch
by LOVE Magazine, The New York Times,
Sunday Times Style, Dazed and Confused, ID, 10 Magazine and Wonderland
Magazine.
