Magazine Front Covers

Magazine Front Covers

I think this magazine cover is successful because of the way the writing and photograph has been layered. I really like how the figure covers some of the writing as this gives the illusion of depth and a three dimensional effect. I also think the photograph is very clear and great quality and I like how it is mostly made up of cool tones which contrast the warm colours of the writing. However, I think that the writing is hard to read in some areas, even though the font is clear, possibly due to the size or colour. Although, this could be thought of as an effective design as it means the reader will have to pick up the magazine and become more engaged straight away. I believe there is too much writing on the front cover as it appears too busy and messy to me, but this too could enhance the chance to engage the reader and there is more points of interest. I think the photograph also works well as it quickly connotes movies and celebrities and therefore gives a preview of the content of the magazine.

I love the front cover of this i-D Magazine due to it's simplicity and elegance. I like the black and white monochromatic colour palette because it is sophisticated, serious and yet playful. The pop of pink to emphasise Adele's name also works well as it is feminine and bold but not overpowering. The way the 'a' of her name is in lowercase gives the writing more of a structural pattern and makes it flow in a more aesthetically pleasing, effortless way. The use of a celebrity on the front cover will also immediately entice more people and gives the impression of high class, glamorous content. I also think this is heightened by the abnormal pose of the singer which makes it more intriguing and eye catching. This also relates to the logo as models on the front cover will often close one eye or cover one eye to mimic the shape of the sideways i-D. I think this is a very strong magazine cover that gives the impression of luxury, youthful culture.

I think this cover is extremely eye-catching and intriguing, for similar reasons to the previous i-D Magazine front cover. I really like the juxtaposition of the red against the cinematic black and white monochromatic photograph as it emphasises the writing and creates depth within the cover. I do however believe that the red border around the photograph makes it look less sophisticated and crisp. I think that the frame makes it appear like the cover has been mounted on card which makes it appear quite juvenile and unrefined. Much like the use of Adele in the last cover, by using a celebrity like Johnny Depp, it appeals to an audience that may have not previously looked at these magazines and therefore will begin to increase the audience of the magazine. I believe the font is clear and a classic style for a magazine cover and the writing on the front is limited, clear and well spaced out so it doesn't engulf the focal point of the photograph.

When i look at this magazine cover, I immediately think it is aimed at females, and about fashion and celebrity culture. I think it looks quite young because of the baby pink writing that is soft and delicate against the very pale background photograph. This has also made it difficult to read all the writing as some areas are too pale to put the pink over. I don't like the large amount of writing framing the photograph as it is distracting, overwhelming and messy due to the variety of different colours, sizes and fronts. I also don't like how the focus is on the writing which is primarily in the foreground while the photograph appears to just support and highlight the writing from the background. I do however think that the overall effect of this Vogue Magazine cover appeals to it's target audience of young females due to the soft colour palette and the us of Rihanna to promote the magazine.
