Dryden Goodwin
Dryden Goodwin
Dryden Goodwin experiments with
drawing combined with photography or live action video. He creates exhibitions,
films, public demonstrations, drawings and soundtracks. He was born in
Bournemouth, UK, but lives and works in London currently. Goodwin graduated
with a BA Hons in Fine Art from the Slade School of Fine Art in 1996.
He has had work displayed in the Tate Modern, Tate Britain, Tate Liverpool, The Photographers' Gallery,
London, The National Portrait Gallery, London, the Venice Biennale and the Hasselblad
Foundation in Gothenburg, Sweden. He has also created his own individual
exhibitions, including ‘Un-Earth’ at the Xian Museum, China 2018, ‘Breathe’
projected at night opposite the Houses of Parliament, London 2012 and ‘Poised’
at Ferens Art Gallery, Hull 2014.
Goodwin focuses on
portraiture and will create pieces in public spaces of close up observations of
individuals and groups. His work’s atmosphere varies as he will sometimes make
his art and photography delicate and intimate while other times he will make
his work isolated and distant. Goodwin tries to fully describe the subject of
his portrait and their surroundings which he believes portraiture often lacks.
The expressive marks he creates reflect on the subjects emotional and
psychological structures. Goodwin likes to experiment with the boundaries
“between anonymity and intimacy, private and public and singular worlds and
group dynamics.”
Although Dryden
Goodwin’s work often looks at portraiture, I really liked and was inspired by
his technique. I thought the way he took a digital image or photograph and then
worked on top to give the artwork meaning and depth is very interesting.
