The Knitting & Stitching Show 2018

The Knitting and Stitching Show

Alexandra Palace

Friday 12th October 2018

The Knitting and Stitching Show is the UK's largest textile event and I can see why. During the day there were two talks, a knitting workshop, an open gallery space of textile artists' work, an abundance of shops and many places to grab a tea and a slice of cake or pastry. The venue for the event was Alexandra Palace which is a beautifully designed piece of architecture. It was built in 1873 and "has survived two fires, hosted the first ever television broadcast and has seen millions of people experience extraordinary events over the last 140 years". 'Ally Pally' as it's commonly known, is currently being restored, however this did not deter from the exquisite design and intricate details. The view from the Palace is also breathtaking. It allows a full view of London stretching right to the horizon. Silhouettes of skyscrapers were dotted against the misty grey sky in the distance.

Within the open gallery space, i was able to look at many influential pieces of art and speak to the creative people who made them. One exhibitor, Studio 21, was a collection of artists who work with textiles to create unique, original and innovative collaborations of different media and stitched textiles. I was drawn to Studio 21's exhibition due to the bold use of and experiments with colour. Most techniques displayed were presented in a variation of colour, which i thought was very effective and interesting. I also liked their use of unconventional materials and objects that wouldn't normally be incorporated within textile work, such as nails, zip ties, plastic bags and rope. I really like dhow Studio 21 used words within their artwork as well, as not many other textile artists at the Knitting and Stitching Show included writing.
